Internet catalogue of Polish wartime losses
The Ministry of Culture and National Heritage of the Republic of Poland launches a new website of Poland's wartime losses
|
Since 1992, the Polish Ministry of Culture has been collecting data on losses suffered by Poland during the Second World War. In the years 1939-1945 Poland lost around 70% of its cultural heritage. Private, public and church collections were plundered and destroyed in an unprecedented way. Among the looted works of art are paintings of such masters as Rafael, Carracci, Breughel, van Dyck, Rubens, or Guardi. Publishing of images of the lost objects significantly increases the chance of finding them and returning to their rightful owners. |
