A multimillion attendance and rave reviews in the international media - these are the measurable effects of the Chopin Year 2010.
The Birthday Decade, the Grand Theatre Gala, „Chopin and his Europe” festival, the XVI International Frederic Chopin Competition in Warsaw and the International Chopinological Congress attended by the most famous musicologists from around the world - these are the most important events celebrating the Chopin Year, all receiving great interest from foreign media.
Thanks to the work of more than 300 foreign correspondents, the information about Poland in the context of the Chopin Year ended up on the pages of most of the world’s media: CNN prepared a report devoted to this subject, Euronews broadcasted materials from the Frederic Chopin Museum in eight languages, and RAI viewers had the chance to watch documentary about Chopin’s Poland. Extensive materials about the inauguration of the Year of Chopin were also aired by Chinese, Japanese and Korean TVs. They were also added to the news programmes around the world via Reuters, AFP, and The Associated Press. Prestigious and influential newspapers and magazines also wrote about it, including: the American New York Times, the British Financial Times and the Guardian, the German Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Die Welt and Süddeutsche Zeitung, the French Le Monde, Le Figaro and Nouvel Observateur, the Spanish El Pais and El Mundo, the Italian Corriere della Sera, and the Russian Nezavisimaya Gazeta, Kommersant and Izwiesta.
The main events outside of Polish borders included: The Asia-Pacific Chopin Competition, Chopin 72 (a series of concerts in the Palace of Fine Arts in Beijing), Chopin at the Expo 2010 in Shanghai, Festival of Young Pianists in Tomsk, Chopin Festival in Paris, 51 Chopin Festival in Marienbad, Chopin in Africa (Nairobi, Mombasa) and the International Chopin Competition of the Persian Gulf.
At the conclusion of the conference summarizing the Chopin Year, the participants placed their signatures on the piano from the sailing ship STS Frederic Chopin. The project Chopin/Polska/ TheCourse included a three-month voyage, which took it to 20 ports in seven European countries.
The Chopin’s Passports have been awarded to 106 outstanding personalities involved in the anniversary celebrations. The awards have been given to the most prominent representatives of the world of politics, music and to the most prominent exponents of Frederic Chopin’s legacy in the world.
