Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska is an art historian. She specializes in problems of architecture of the 19th and 20th centuries, theories of art and protection of monuments.

A graduate of the University of Warsaw. She also studied at the Faculty of Architecture of the Technical University of Berlin. She earned a Ph.D degree at the University of Warsaw in 1995, habilitated at the Institute of Art of the Polish Academy of Sciences in 2005. She also completed postgraduate studies in finance and taxation in the Warsaw School of Economics (graduated in 2003).

She received scholarships of several European scientific institutions, including the British Academy and Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin. She participated in many international research projects, collaborating, inter alia, with the Herder Institute in Marburg and Geisteswissenschaftliches Zentrum Geschichte und Kultur Ostmitteleuropas in Leipzig.

Since 1985 she has worked as a researcher at the Institute of Art, Polish Academy of Sciences. From 1999 to 2007 she performed duties of a deputy director, and most recently – editor in chief of the Dictionary of Polish Architects. At the same time, since 2006 she has worked as a Professor at the Institute of Art History, University of Gdańsk, and from September 2008 – director of the Institute. A member of many scientific councils of Polish and German institutions, including Herder Institute in Marburg and Germanisches Nationalmuseum in Nuremberg.

Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska is the author of scientific books:

  • “Most i wiadukt im. ks. Józefa Poniatowskiego” (“Prince Józef Poniatowski Bridge and viaduct”),
  • “Stefan Szyller (1857-1933). Warszawski architekt doby historyzmu” (“Stefan Szyller (1857-1933). Warsaw architect of the Historicism period”),  
  • “Atlas zabytków architektury w Polsce” (“Atlas of architectural monuments in Poland”) - co-author,
  • “Świątynie handlu. Warszawska architektura komercyjna doby wielkomiejskiej” (“The temples of Commerce. Warsaw commercial architecture at the Metropolitan Times”),
  • “Nadbałtyckie Zakopane. Połąga w czasach Tyszkiewiczów” (“Baltic Zakopane. Palanga in the times of the Tyszkiewicz family”).

She was also involved in popularization of knowledge about the history of art and monuments by publishing the books:

  • “Zagadki z historii sztuki” (“Puzzles in art history”),
  • “Polska. Pałace i dwory” (“Poland. Palaces and mansions”),
  • “Polska. Świątynie, klasztory i domy modlitw” (“Poland. Temples, monasteries and houses of prayer”).   

Recently she was responsible for the substantive preparation of a bilingual publication accompanying the exhibition “Obok. Polska – Niemcy 1000 lat historii w sztuce” (“Side by Side. Poland-Germany. A 1000 Years of Art and History”), organized in Berlin on the occasion of the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union.  

Under-secretary of State, Prof. Małgorzata Omilanowska directly supervises the tasks performed by the Department of Cultural Heritage and the Department of National Cultural Institutions.
